Cesar Chavez Day March 2011

March 31, 2011

"We Are One" was the theme as NABET-CWA members joined thousands of workers and students on a march downtown to honor Cesar Chavez and defend workers' rights.

The 4-mile march began with a rally at City College then headed down Chavez 2011 BB Street to the Embarcadero. As the group passed Bank of America and Chase Bank, they deposited foreclosure notices to bring attention to the bank's unfair lending practices and role in the financial meltdown.

The crowd went right through Civic Center Plaza, where they signed petitions and made phone calls to City Council members, urging them to pass a resolution to support collective bargaining rights.

The march continued to Seaport Village and stopped briefly at fish wholesaler Chesapeake Fish Company and Harbor House Restaurant to deliver plates of rotten fish in recognition of their anti-union practices.

Back on Harbor Drive, the group went through the valet parking entrances of the Manchester Grand Hyatt and San Diego Marriott in support of hotel workers. When the crowd reached 1st Avenue, it was time for a "funeral for the middle class." Volunteers handed out long-stemmed carnations and a black coffin joined the front of the procession.

The group also stopped on Broadway and wrote messages on the street in chalk in front of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association as a reminder to companies and local governments not to try and take away people's voices in the workplace, whether it's public or private sector workers.

Cesar Chavez Day March 2010

March 31, 2010

"Good Jobs, Local Jobs" was the theme as NABET-CWA members joined over 1,000 local union members to celebrate Cesar Chavez Day.

The crowd marched four miles from Spanish Landing, through the two main terminals of Lindbergh Field (in support of TSA workers), to the County Administration building, through the lobby of the Westin Emerald Plaza (in support of hotel workers) and on to a rally at City Hall.
